Members of St Lawrence Lodge in Scunthorpe have given Brigg & District Breast Cancer Support Group a £750 donation from the New Provincial Benevolent Fund.
The group was founded 15 years ago by Angie Benson, its current Chair. It was set up to offer support, advice and friendship to breast cancer patients and their families and friends. Its aim is to provide a comfortable environment to socialise and share a common bond, and each month the group tries to offer something different that is interesting and enjoyable to members, such as a speaker, demonstration or quiz. All those who do help in the running of the group do so voluntarily.
The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month at in the ballroom at the Angel Suite, Brigg. The committee and members fundraise throughout the year. Funds raised go towards holding our monthly meetings, an annual day coach trip for our members and a local theatre trip. The group has also set up a referral system for the breast cancer nurses at Scunthorpe Hospital to use for anyone they think would benefit from a cheque from the group to go towards the cost of their wig.
Membership stands at around 45 people from Scunthorpe, Brigg and the surrounding villages, with about 25 attending the monthly meeting.
