Two years of National Service in the army were the making of Deeping St James Freemason Brian Holdich – who has decided that telling his story will now help boost the #Lincs 2025 fund.
Brian has written a book – his seventh – called ‘My National Service – the Making of a Man’, which he’s offering for sale around the Province for just £10.
Says St Guthlac Lodge member Brian: “I was 19 when I was called up to do two years’ National Service in the Army. The book describes the trials and tribulations of a soldier’s service life.”
Brian was in not one but two regiments – the Northamptonshires and the Essex Regiment – and spent much of his time before the colours in Hong Kong, where duties involved patrolling the border between there and China.
He was posted to eight countries, and also spent a lot of time at sea aboard troop ships, travelling about 28,000 miles.
“My National Service was an education of sorts, and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world,” he added.
• If you’d like a copy of Brian’s book, he’ll happily post one out to you for £10 including p&p. Please send a cheque, made payable to him, to Brian Holdich, 4 Elm Close, Market Deeping, Peterborough, PE6 8JN. If you’d like it to be signed, please send a cheque for £15 instead.
