Organisers of a fitness charity challenge say relaxation of lockdown rules from Monday provides motivation to shed lockdown pounds and raise charity funds by making mutual support possible.
“The rule of six for outdoor gatherings offers the opportunity for a bit of mutual support in meeting one of the targets in our Race for The Festival 2021,” says Chris Fletcher, a founder member of the Free Wheelers Motorcycle Lodge, the driving force behind the challenge. “With up to six allowed to gather outside, people can support each other in achieving one of the goals in our challenge by walking, running, or cycling together.”
The challenge has so far received pledges of about £900, which Chris would love to see top £1,000. “We don’t have a formal target, but it would be nice to get another £100,” he said.
The money’s being raised as a contribution to #Lincs2025, a five-year commitment by Lincolnshire’s Freemasons with the aspiration of collecting £2.25m for the Freemasons’ charity the MCF. “It’s all money that ultimately comes back into the community in one way or another,” said Chris. “It is given to a wide range of deserving causes from small charities and individuals to better-known ones like the Air Ambulance and the hospice movement.”
The Free Wheelers’ fitness challenge is a virtual event. Said Chris: “In a nutshell, we’re asking participants to pledge to complete a 5KM, 10KM or 50KM distance walking, running, cycling – or any other non-motorised method.
“The rules are simple. People need to register by April 16th, and complete the distance they’ve chosen between May 1st and 8th. That means they don’t have to do it all at once, and can ‘chunk it out’ to make it easier if they’d prefer to do that. Once it’s done, they have until May 10th to upload distance and time onto the web site, and all competitors will get a medal. Everyone loves a medal,” he added.
Price for entry is £20 per event (you can do one, two or all three!) which includes the medal. All proceeds will go to the #Lincs2025 Festival.
There are also running and cycle tops to buy so you look the part when you complete the distance! More details and registration can be found here: Race for the Festival
