Lincolnshire Scouts’ new County Lead Volunteer (Commissioner) Howard Nelson, who has recently joined our special interest Rudyard Kipling Lodge in Horncastle, is appealing for help. Are you the person he’s looking for?
He writes: “We are currently looking for a volunteer Treasurer for our County Trustee Board to start in late September. The role provides strategic governance and input to the County. Our existing Treasurer is remaining on the Board to become our Chair, and he will of course provide support as will I.
“As a Trustee, you would make a huge contribution at county level to the UK’s biggest youth movement. Now more than ever, our young people need skills for life to prepare them for the future. But for that to happen we need great foundations in place to keep Scouts safe, to ensure we are financially robust, and to deliver fantastic support for our volunteers in Lincolnshire.
“The county has 5,000 young people and 2,000 adult volunteers who support Scouts in Lincolnshire. We are in a strong financial position with c£600k in the bank/investments. The county had a turnover of £305k in the year ended 31 March 2024. I was appointed as County Lead Volunteer for Lincolnshire Scouts in May 2024 and we are at an exciting point in our development as we seek to grow.
“The Board meets five times a year on MS teams with a face-face AGM each September. There is also the opportunity to attend a county strategy day, once per year. The new Treasurer may wish to make a greater contribution, this is up to them, but not expected.
“We employ a bookkeeper and use Xero, and a firm of accountants prepare our year end accounts. The Treasurer manages payments (to ensure a segregation of duties), produces a budget and management accounts for each meeting.
“We are looking for someone who is familiar with accounting and finance. They may be a qualified accountant but this is not a pre-requisite. We provide induction training and will support anyone in the role. The term of the appointment is three years.”
